What We Fear

What We Fear is a poetic short documentary, born from a prose piece of the same name that I wrote in the days following the start of the Gaza genocide. At that time, my sisters, nephews, and niece were staying with us and I saw how scared they were. For the first time in my life, I felt scared for someone other than myself. I realized that these are the emotions that fuel everything… my love and fear for my nephews and my nieces.

I’ve come to realize that fear is a universal language, just like love. If you love someone, you will fear for them. And if you fear for someone, you must love them. This film represents that bond between love and fear. How they walk hand in hand with each other.

Logline: October 2023. After fleeing war in Sudan, Ahmed reunites with his family in Gaza, only to become trapped under siege and constant bombardment. As a genocide unfolds around them, Ahmed and his young nephews experience moments of joy, tenderness, and haunting loss. What We Fear is a poetic testimony, fueled by love and fear, about–and by–the innocent children of Gaza.
